This idea with offering free tours were born from an interrail trip I took in the balkan and eastern europe . Everywhere I came, there were lot of dedicated local people, acting alone or in an organization, that offered free guidad walking tours. These tours were really popular, especial with young people who often travel on a tight budget, but also with families and seniors. The component of succes is that the guidad tours are conducted by locals, people who have real connections with the city.
The idea is that the tours are totally free, but if you enjoyed the tour, it is usage to tip the guide at the end of the tour. If you didn't like it, you don't have to tip. This encourage the guide to be engaged and really focused on giving the group a nice experience.
I am myself born and raised in Kalmar, and I love the city's rich history, from medievel time up til present time.
I speak swedish, english, german and some italian. The tours are conducted mostly in english, but if there are only swedish native speakers I might switch.
